Derby's Ladies XV lost 17 - 10 away to Coalville last night, however when you consider that the last time the two teams met Coalville put 50 points past the Derby side just goes to show the continued enormous strides of improvement this Derby's Ladies team has made in what is their first season of Rugby. 16th Apr'08 - Derby RFC are looking for a new Head Coach after Ian Gittens announced he is to step down at the end of the season. Here's the article as published in yesterday's Derby Evening Telegraph written by Sports writer Chris Watson.

Gittens is leaving the club after only a year in charge due to family commitments. His last game will be the Derbyshire Cup final on May 11.

"This is the hardest rugby decision I have ever made but my family has to come first," said Gittens. "The demands of travelling and my personal circumstances are such that I no longer feel I can put into the club what the club and the players deserve. I don't want to do half a job. That is not the person I am and the club don't deserve it. It is incredibly frustrating because we have all worked so hard but hopefully I have laid some good foundations for whoever takes over."

Gittens is now considering the offer of a similar position at a club closer to his home.

Derby's director of rugby Paul McCartin, who is also Gittens' assistant coach, said: "As far as I am concerned, it is a blow to the club, because we were just getting the team to play the way he wanted. After the previous regime and quite a few players left last summer, Ian came in and started from scratch and did a very good job with the resources available. Everyone at the club is disappointed he is leaving but we respect and understand his decision. Nobody should under-estimate the efforts made behind the scenes to keep the club in this league."

Chairman Gordon Stirling said: "It is unfortunate but Ian's family has got to come first. He did a good job and I know he feels bad, because things were starting to turn a corner. We have lost a good coach but now we need to find another one. We have got our feelers out and will be talking to people over the next few weeks. We are looking at all options. It is a big job and hopefully we can find someone who will keep people interested."

On Friday 21st March Ilkeston RFC fielded an ’Academy Invitational XV’ when hosting Irish touring side Bruff U18’s, who were preparing for their provincial Munster cup final in a week’s time. The game, which resulted in an 8 try 34-15 win for the Ilkeston Barbarians, featured three Derby RFC U16s in the form of Ryan Holmes, Tom Rusga and Joe Pass as well as several players from Nottingham Academy – with Academy Manager John Widdowson watching the game. A thoroughly enjoyable game to play and watch – it was played in true Barbarian spirit; with the Barbarians only meeting up during the warm up of the game, in contrast to Bruff who have reportedly been together since U10s and undefeated since 2005/06.

20th Jan'08 - It's Derby 25 - 00 Newark in yesterday's Midlands Two East league fixture. Yes you read the scoreline correctly !!! - With a solid defence being the cornerstone Derby justifiably took the 2 points with what was a fantastic team effort against a side that were prior to the game in 2nd place in the league. With Old Northamptonians, Market Bosworth and Ampthill all winning as well this win against Newark has helped Derby maintain our league position of 8th. 12th Jan'08 - If ever there was a game of two halves (hic !) then today's NLD Cup Qtr Final game between Derby and Matlock was a fine example as Derby dominated the 1st half to lead 10 - 00 at the break .....then comes the second half where Matlock come back from a 15 - 00 deficit to bring the score level to 15 - 15 at the end of 80 minutes. As it's a Cup game extra time is played, no further points  are added which leaves the scoreline at 15 - 15, however on a Try count back Matlock go through to the Semi Finals as they scored 3 Tries to Derby's 2 Tries, 1 Penalty and 1 Conversion. 7th Jan'08 - Derby's Ladies were away yesterday against a very strong and experienced Old Leamingtonians Ladies side that included West Midlands and Great Britain players. The final score was Old Leamingtonians 58 - 00 Derby. I'm told that despite the scoreline Derby played well in what is effectively only their 4th competitive fixture and that they learnt a lot from this game. There's a return game scheduled here at Derby RFC on the 20th April'08. The next scheduled game for Derby Ladies XV is on the 25th Jan'08 when they're at home to Coalville with a 7pm kickoff.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5th Jan'08 - Today's Midlands Two East result was Melton Mowbray 07 - 07 Derby. Down to 13 men and in the 11th minute of injury time or thereabouts (it seemed a long time !!!) Derby despite some fierce defending could not stop a late (very late) try by Melton Mowbray which was successfully converted. Here's the match report and photograph gallery from the game and here's the Midlands Two East league table and results from all of today's Midlands Two East league games.

Next Saturday 12th Jan'08 sees Derby at home to Matlock in a NLD Cup match.

4th Jan'08 - Quiz nights at Haslams  a few words from the Quiz Master Dave Archer. On a wet December Monday last year 60 plus people turned up for the monthly quiz at Haslams, a mixture of members and public took part in a not to serious quiz although good prize money was paid out to the top three teams.

Some people also took advantage of the Curry and Drink night for £6 which is also good value. As Quizmaster I would like to thank the people that turn up most months and support this club event and also thank Helen my other half for her assistance.

It just leaves me to wish everybody A Happy New Year and hopefully see more of you down this year, its the first Monday of every month starting this Monday 7th January 2008 at 8.30pm.

Dave Archer
