Simon Holt leaves the Paviors defender grasping thin air

Derby 38 - 03 Paviors

It was another occasion when Haslams simply outclassed their opposition, running in six tries in the process. At times it seemed that Haslams had more players on the pitch, such was the speed and closeness of support for the ball carrier. This win brings their scoring stats to a massive 155 points for and only 21 against. Captain, Neill Collier, would argue that this reflects their 15-man approach to the game with the emphasis on open rugby getting the ball to the wings. Success has brought a certain and confident swagger to his players. They believe in themselves and enjoy playing. For me, John Lund, on the left wing epitomises this. He is one of the most exciting runners and generates an air of expectancy every time he gets his hands on the ball.

After two minutes, good interpassing opened up a gap for Tristan Poyser to cut through for a try followed three minutes later by a David Riley penalty.

The Derby Blitz had begun. Some quicker passing sent David Bussell over in the corner and following a good determined run by Richard Teeney, Simon Holt dodged his way over for Derby’s third try. Just before the interval, Paul Burrows took over kicking duties and landed a penalty to give Haslams a twenty one points lead at the interval.

The second half was punctuated with penalties and good drives by the Haslams pack. Peter Wilcox, who had an outstanding game, scored following an intercept by Paul Archer. Minutes later Richard Teeney scored his first try which Paul Burrows converted and approaching full time Teeney crossed in the corner for his second. He claims that there is no truth in the rumour that he held back from receiving a pass from Phil Maddocks to avoid scoring a hat trick of tries and suffering the financial penalty that accrues.

The Paviors fullback kicked a consolation penalty to get them on the score sheet.

Overall it was a good team performance but there are still a few aspects to be improved upon. In my opinion, Haslams is a strong enough side to take on tougher opposition.
