Rod
Muir (one of Derby's 1st XV players) is taking a 'year out' in New
Zealand where's he's currently playing Rugby for Kamo Rugby Club. Kamo
are keen to further develop their links with Derby RFC and as such
here's some brief comments about the club, it's ties with Derby RFC
and some photo's.
Kamo Rugby Club is
situated on the North Side of the City of Whangarie, North Island, New
Zealand. This is the Club of Ian Jones (All Blacks) and a number of
Super 12 players - eg. Mike Storey (Prop), Hayden Taylor (Full Back)
for the Auckland Blues.
The head coach is Norm
Pratt formerly of Thames Valley (NZ) and the manager is Don Bradburn.
Kamo already have a
link with Derby RFC in that two of their players Beven Bradburn and Tim Rushbrook have spent a season here at Derby and
now Rod Muir is playing for Kamo this season.
Rugby in New Zealand is
the dominant sport and is appreciated by every age group from children
to grandparents. A high standard of coaching is available from both
staff and Super 12 players who remain with their Club throughout much
of the season.
All Blacks and Maori
players influence a very direct method of tackling 'close the gap on
your opponent and hit him hard at chest height and drive him back' -
sounds like another code !!! - reminds you of Micky Skinner ?
